When you live in Cartagena de Indias, you always have the feeling that you are one of the contestants on ‘The Price is Right’. To buy things on the street in the city centre or to go to a restaurant could cost you an arm and a leg if you don’t have a clear understanding of how much things cost. If you are a foreigner they will give you a special price and, because you will compare everything to the prices back home, you will think you’re getting a bargain!
I decided to spend a month in this wonderful city in the Colombian Caribbean playing ‘The Price is Right’ with the locals. Thanks to this experience, in this post you will be able to find a list with the approximate prices of the most basic expenses of every tourist. I´m sure that this will save you a good amount of money and it will also help you to avoid feeling that you have paid more than you should have after every purchase.
But first, I´m going to give you some important advice:
In Cartagena you must HAGGLE. Don’t feel ashamed of doing it as a lot of Cartageneros won´t feel ashamed of taking advantage of your lack of information. Whenever you want to buy something that doesn´t have a price on, always offer the vendor half the price of what he or she is asking for. Depending on the expression on his or her face, you will have an idea of whether you are getting close to the right price or not. Most of the time they won´t sell it to you half price, but if you start walking away they will start shouting prices that are 30% or 40% cheaper than the original. And that information will be priceless to you with the next vendor.
Great, now that you know the golden rule for every tourist coming to Cartagena de Indias, we can start talking about transportation costs:
You always have to agree a price with taxi drivers before your ride as they don´t have a meter. The minimum fare is 5,000 pesos (£1.80, 2.10€, $2.70) which usually covers the ride from one borough to another. On top of that, you have to add 1,000 or 2,000 pesos for every additional neighbourhood (£0.35-£0.70, 0.40€- 0.80€, $0.50-$1). Bus rides cost just 1,600 pesos (£0.50, 0.70€ $0.85), which as a general rule you have to pay once you are seated and not when you enter. Cartagena’s buses are privately owned and are quite a show: colourful, with neon lights, pimped up with pictures of the Virgin Mary and Jesus of Nazareth next to convertible Chevrolets. To be honest, a lot of them look like they haven’t ever passed an MOT. Nevertheless, they are able to take you at full speed to every neighbourhood of the city. Look at the front window of the bus to know which borough they are heading to, some of them have very curious names like Ternera (beef) or Carnero (ram).
If you want to walk around the centre of the city, you need to be well prepared for what you can find there:
Once you are walking around the wonderful and colourful centre of Cartagena, you will see that there are a lot of men carrying wooden boxes full of products like tobacco, cigars, chewing gum, water, sweets, coffee, etc. They are the so-called tuchines or chinos.
Black coffee, which is known in Colombia as tinto, can be bought from 500 pesos (£0.30, 0.25€, $0.20).
You can also get a bottle of water for 2,000 on the street (£0.70, 0.85€, $1.10), although they will usually ask you for 3,000 pesos.
Tobacco in Colombia is very cheap, a pack of 20 from the famous red brand costs just 3,300 pesos (£1.20, 1.40€, $1.80), and there are packets from 2,200 pesos. If you happen to be an unfortunate smoker consider yourself lucky because you can buy a loose cigarette for just 300 pesos (£0.10, 0.12€, $0.15). By the way, never ask for the price, just give them the money.
In the centre, at Plaza de los Coches, next to Torre del Reloj, there´s an arched area with shops selling typical sweets from Colombia. All of them have agreed on a minimum price but not on a maximum price. Don’t pay more than 5,000 pesos for a tray like the one in the photo below (£1.80, 2.10€, $2.70). The sweets can also be bought separately for around 800 and 1,200 pesos each (£0.30, 0.35€, $0.45).
In the centre, you will also find the famous fritangeras selling their delicious beef and chicken pasties as well as cheese arepas that you can buy from 700 to 2,500 pesos (£0.25-£0.70, 0.30€-0.85€, $0.40-$1.10)
There are a lot of options for eating out in Cartagena. You will find everyone inviting you to their restaurants by saying ´bienvenido, adelante´(welcome, come in). If you want to avoid exorbitant prices, follow these suggestions:
For around 4,000 pesos (£1.40, 1.70€, $2.20), you can get a cheap breakfast of coffee, bread and butter plus eggs any way you like (the tastiest and most famous in Colombia are eggs Perico style, scrambled eggs with fried onions and tomato)
Lunch isn´t expensive either. Every time you go to a restaurant and want to eat cheaply, you have to ask if they have a ´corriente´ (this literally means ordinary, common), which is what locals ask for. For around 5,500 to 10,000 pesos (£2-£3.60, 2.30€-4.20€, $3-$5.40) you will get the soup of the day: either vegetable, fish, or bone (with meat) plus a tray that usually comes with: rice, fried plantain, avocado, salad and fried fish (most commun is mojarra) or meat.
If you pay a bit more, you can eat a dish that might be better presented, that will come with some sort of an extra and which is sometimes, but not always, better quality. This is what they call Ejecutivo (Executive) and costs around 14,000 and 20,000 pesos (£5-£7, 6€-8.50€, $7.50-$11).

I recommend that you to always ask for the menu or at least ask for the price beforehand, otherwise they can charge you more in the bill. And be careful that they don’t bring you the tourist menu! To make sure, look at the other tables and check that everyone has the same menu. Even so, if you want to avoid problems, you can always eat at supermarket canteens. They are constantly full of locals as they offer a good variety of food and low prices.
Cartagena is always very hot and the best way to bear it is by drinking! Warning, if you don’t drink alcohol you better not read what comes next:
Alcohol in Cartagena, as with everywhere in Colombia, is quite expensive. If you like drinking and you don’t want to waste your money you have to drink the same as locals: aguardiente, rum or beer. Surprisingly aguardiente, a spirit with an alcohol percentage of between 29% and 60%, and rum are much cheaper than any wine that you can find. A half litre bottle of Ron Medellín or Aguardiente Antioqueño will cost you around 14,000 pesos (£5, 6€, $7.50).
If you like to mix it, a 2 litre bottle of a soft drink will cost you around 3,000 pesos and to avoid the drink from getting warm due to Cartagena’s constant heat, you will have to add some ice cubes. For 4,000 pesos (£1.40, 1.70€, $2.20) you can buy a 3kg bag or, if you are planning a big night, 10,000 pesos for 10kg (£3.60, 4.20€, $5.40).
However, if what tickles your fancy is a cocktail in a bar, you will find 2×1 cocktails in most of pubs of Cartagena. In the Getsemaní neighbourhood or downtown, you can get 2 of the same cocktail for between 12,000 and 15,000 pesos (£4.30-£5.30, 5€-6.30€, $6.50-$8). If beer is what you like, you can drink what Colombians drink. A bottle of their famous beer Águila or Club Colombia will set you back between 3,000 and 5,000 pesos (£1-£1.80, 1.30€-2.10€, $1.60-$2.70). Wine lovers should know that a glass costs between 12,000 and 20,000 pesos (£4.30-£7, 5€-8.2€, $6.50-$10.85). For that reason, Colombia is the perfect place to take a liking to aguardiente or rum.
By the way, if you like going to the cinema, you can go to any of the multi-screens in Cartagenas´ shopping centres to watch a film for just 7,000 pesos(£2.50, 3€, $3.80). In case you aren´t good at Spanish yet, don’t worry, most non-Spanish movies have Spanish subtitles. So you can start practising by reading!

The most famous supermarket chain is Éxito. If you have to do a big shop, avoid going to the Éxito supermarkets in the centre as they have higher prices and lower hygiene. In my opinion, the supermarket with the best prices is Carrefour which is at the Mall Plaza el Castillo, very close to the centre.

Cuando vives en Cartagena de Indias siempre tienes la sensación de ser uno de los concursantes del programa el precio justo. Comprar en las calles del centro o ir a un restaurante puede salirte por un ojo de la cara si no tienes una clara idea de lo que cuestan las cosas. Además, si eres extranjero te aplican tarifa especial, y como comparas todo con los precios de tu país de origen encima te parecerá que todo está tirado de precio.
Decidí pasar un mes en esta preciosa ciudad del caribe colombiano jugando con los locales al precio justo. Gracias a ello, en este post podrás encontrar una lista con los precios más aproximados de los gastos más básicos de todo turista. Seguro que te ayudan a ahorrarte una buena cantidad de dinero y a que después de cada compra no tengas la sensación de haber pagado más por el producto, sino más bien ¡el precio justo!
Pero primero, voy a darte un consejo muy importante:
En Cartagena tienes que REGATEAR. No debe de darte vergüenza hacerlo pues a muchos cartageneros no les dará vergüenza aprovecharse de tu desconocimiento. Cuando quieras comprar algo que no muestre el precio, ofrécele al vendedor siempre la mitad de lo que te pide. En función de la cara que te pongan te harás una idea de si te estas acercando al precio justo o no. La mayoría de las veces no te lo querrán vender a mitad de precio, pero en cuanto los pases de largo te empezarán a gritar el precio un 30 o 40% más barato. Y esa información te será muy útil para negociar con el siguiente vendedor.
Muy bien, una vez que conoces la regla de oro del turista en Cartagena de Indias, podemos pasar a hablar de las tarifas de transporte:
Con los taxistas siempre tendrás que acordar el precio antes de montarte en el taxi, pues no usan taxímetro. La carrera mínima es de 5.000 pesos (2,10€), lo que normalmente te cubre ir de un barrio a otro. Además, deberás añadirle unos 1.000 ó 2.000 pesos (0,40€-0,80€) por cada barrio adicional. El viaje en autobús sólo cuesta 1.600 pesos (0,70€), los cuales por regla general te los cobrarán una vez estés sentado y no al entrar como de costumbre. Los autobuses en Cartagena son privados y todo un espectáculo: coloridos, con luces neón, decorados con pegatinas de la Virgen María y Jesús de Nazaret al lado de un Chevrolet descapotable. La verdad es que muchos de ellos tienen la pinta de no haber pasado una ITV en su vida. Aun así, son capaces de llevarte a toda velocidad a los diferentes barrios de la ciudad. Fíjate bien en el cristal delantero del autobús para saber al barrio al que se dirigen, algunos de ellos tienen nombres tan curiosos como Ternera o Cabrero.
Si quieres dar un paseo por el centro de la ciudad tienes que estar bien preparado para lo que puedes encontrarte:
Cuando vayas paseando por el precioso y colorido centro de Cartagena, veras que hay muchos hombres con una cajita de madera llena de productos como tabaco, puros, chicles, agua, golosinas, café, etc. Son los llamados tuchines o chinos.
El café solo, que también venden y que en Colombia llaman tinto, lo puedes comprar desde 500 pesos (0,25€).
Una botella de agua la puedes conseguir desde 2.000 pesos (0,85€) en la calle, aunque normalmente te pedirán 3.000 pesos.
El tabaco en Colombia es muy barato, un paquete de 20 cigarros de la famosa marca roja sólo cuesta 3.300 pesos (1,40€), y hay paquetes desde 2.200 pesos. Si lamentablemente eres un fumador y decides comprar cigarros sueltos considérate afortunado pues no tendrás que pagar más de 300 pesos (0,12€). Nunca preguntes cuánto cuesta, sólo dale el dinero.
En la Plaza de los Coches del centro, al lado de la Torre del Reloj, hay una zona abovedada con puestos donde venden unos dulces muy típicos colombianos. Todos han acordado un precio mínimo pero nadie un precio máximo. No pagues más de 5.000 pesos (2,10€) por una bandeja como la de la foto. Los dulces los venden por separado a unos 800 y 1.200 pesos (0,35€).
También encontraras a las famosas fritangueras vendiendo sus deliciosas empanadas de carne, pollo y arepas de queso. El precio va desde 700 a 2.500 pesos (0,30€-0,85€).
Para comer en Cartagena de Indias tienes muchas opciones. Todo el mundo te dirá ´bienvenido, adelante´. Si quieres evitar precios abusivos, sigue estas recomendaciones:
El desayuno en Cartagena lo puedes conseguir barato, por unos 4.000 pesos (1,70€) puedes tomar café, pan con mantequilla y huevos al gusto (los ricos y conocidos en Colombia, son los huevos Pericos, huevos revueltos con cebolla y tomate).
El almuerzo no es caro tampoco. Siempre que vayas a un bar y quieras comer barato tienes que preguntar si tienen ´corriente´, es lo que se piden los locales para quitarse el hambre. Por entre 5.500 y 10.000 pesos (2,30€-4,20€) te pondrán la sopa del día que pidas: de verdura, pescado o de hueso (con carne), y una bandeja que normalmente tiene: arroz, banana frita, aguacate, ensalada y pescado frito (mojarra es el más conocido) o carne, y además te ponen un jugo de frutas. No siempre te traerán el jugo, así que no olvides pedirlo.
Por un poco más de dinero puedes comerte un menú que quizá este mejor presentado y que traerá algún extra y a veces es de mejor calidad, pero no siempre. Es lo que ellos llaman el plato Ejecutivo y que cuesta entre 14.000 y 20.000 pesos (6€-8,50€).

Te aconsejo que siempre pidas la carta o menú o que preguntes el precio de la comida de antemano, sino te pueden cobrar más al final. Y ten cuidado ¡que no te traigan la carta para turistas!, para asegurarte mira que todas las mesas tengan el mismo menú. Aun así, si quieres evitarte problemas, siempre puedes comer en los supermercados. Están llenos constantemente de locales ya que tienen buena variedad y muy bajos precios.
En Cartagena siempre hace mucho calor, y la mejor manera de sobrellevarlo no es otra que ¡bebiendo! Atención, si no bebes alcohol será mejor que no leas lo que viene a continuación:
El alcohol en Cartagena, como en toda Colombia, es bastante caro. Si te gusta el alcohol y no quieres rascarte mucho el bolsillo tendrás que beber lo que los locales: aguardiente, ron, o cerveza. Sorprendentemente el aguardiente, un alcohol con una graduación de entre 29% y 60%, y el ron cuestan mucho más barato que cualquier vino que puedas encontrar. Una botella de medio litro de Ron Medellín o Aguardiente Antioqueño te costará alrededor de 14.000 pesos (6€).
Si te gusta mezclarlo con refresco la botella de dos litros te saldrá por unos 3.000 pesos y para que la bebida aguante el calor de Cartagena tendrás que mezclarlo con hielo. Por 4.000 pesos (1,70€) puedes comprar una bolsa de 3kg y si vas de fiesta 10.000 pesos la de 10kg (4,20€).
Pero si lo que quieres es tomarte un coctel en algún bar, podrás encontrar cocteles 2×1 en la mayoría de los bares. En el barrio de Getsemaní o en el centro por entre 12.000 y 15.000 pesos (5€-6,30€). Si lo que te gusta es la cerveza, puedes beber lo que beben los colombianos. Su famosa cerveza Águila o Club Colombia normalmente te costará entre 3.000 y 5.000 pesos (1,30€-2,10€). Los amantes del vino deben de saber que una copa cuesta entre 12.000 y 20.000 pesos (5€-8,2€). Colombia es sin duda el lugar perfecto para empezar a aficionarse al aguardiente o el ron.
Ah, y por cierto, si te gusta el cine, puedes ir a cualquier multicines en los centros comerciales de Cartagena a ver películas por sólo 7.000 pesos (3€). Si el español no es todavía tu fuerte no te preocupes, la mayoría de las películas extranjeras están subtituladas al español, ¡puedes empezar a practicar leyendo!.

La cadena de supermercados más famosa es Éxito. Si tienes que hacer grandes compras, evitar comprar en los supermercados del centro que tienen precios más caros y poca higiene. Para mí el mejor supermercado con los mejores precios es el Carrefour que está en Mall Plaza el Castillo, muy cerca del Centro.
