If you have never had the experience of driving a Formula 1 car, then get a taxi in Cartagena de Indias.
Plagued with little yellow taxis, Cartagena seems to be in the middle of the qualifying sessions of F1 every day. The taxi drivers, most of them retired NASCAR drivers who understand the popularity of the races, are interested in sharing this marvellous spectacle with all pedestrians in the city circuit. That’s why you will hear them honk the horn at you 1, 2 ,3… or up to 20 times if necessary to let you know, in case you are distracted, that they can drop you at the finishing line.
If you decide to take part in the classification round, you better be quick. Stand close to the edge of the track and wait for the drivers to honk the horn at you. To decide which car is best, trust your instincts and don’t worry if you see anyone inside, here races are shared. Do not ever ask for the price of the race, on the contrary, tell them how much you are willing to pay. Next, while getting into the car, tell the taxi driver which finishing line you are heading to at the same time that you close the door with the car already running. Oh, and above all, hang on tight to your seat. Don’t bother looking for the seatbelt because, as cognoscenti say, the Cartagena automotive commission enforced all drivers to take them off to be able to compete. A wise decision that was intended to reduce the vehicles’ weight to gain a few seconds in speed. And if you happen to grab a taxi that hasn’t respected the regulation, no doubt you will get to the finishing line before you even have time to fasten your seatbelt.
Once on the track, you have to appreciate the skilful techniques of the drivers in the circuit: impossible overtakes between two cars on a one-way street with two lanes; drafting with the cars in front, behind, on the left and on the right; reverses on the track with the passenger door open, and the cartagenero special: acceleration from 0 to 60mph in less than 3 seconds while the traffic lights are turning red.
All in all, getting around in Cartagena de Indias by taxi is relaxing. It saves you from having to run all the time at the pedestrian crossings, also known as finishing lines, to avoid drivers running you over.

Si nunca antes has vivido la experiencia de pilotar un fórmula 1, cuando vengas a Cartagena de Indias cógete un taxi.
Plagada de pequeños taxis amarillos, Cartagena parece estar todos los días en plena ronda Q3 de clasificación para la F1. Los taxistas, en su mayoría pilotos retirados de la NASCAR, sabedores del interés que estas carreras suscitan, se interesan por compartir este maravilloso espectáculo con todos los transeúntes del circuito. Por ello, escucharás que te pitan 1, 2, 3… ó hasta 20 veces si es necesario para avisarte, en caso de que vayas despitad@, que ellos te pueden dejar por la línea de meta.
Si decides aventurarte a compartir la ronda de clasificación debes de ser rápido. Sitúate al borde de la pista y espera a que los pilotos te empiecen a pitar. Confía en tu instinto para decidir que coche es más adecuado y no te preocupes si hay alguien dentro, aquí las carreras se comparten. Nunca preguntes el precio de la carrera, por el contrario dile tú lo que les vas a pagar. Seguidamente mientras te montas di a que línea de meta te diriges al mismo tiempo que vas cerrando la puerta con el coche en marcha. Ah, y sobre todo, agárrate bien al asiento. No te molestes buscando el cinturón de seguridad ya que dicen los entendidos que la comisión automovilística de la alcaldía de Cartagena obligó a todos los pilotos a quitarlos para poder competir. Una decisión sabia que buscaba reducir el peso de los vehículos para ganar unas decimas en velocidad. Y si por casualidad te subes en uno que no haya respetado la regulación, seguro que llegas a tu meta antes de tener si quiera tiempo de abrocharte el cinturón.
Una vez en pista, sólo tienes que deleitarte con las habilidosas técnicas de conducción de los pilotos del circuito: adelantamientos imposibles entre dos coches en carril doble de sentido único; cogida de rebufo con los coches de delante, de atrás, de la izquierda y de la derecha; marchas atrás en pista, aceleración de 0 a 100 km/h en menos de 3 segundos mientras el semáforo se pone en rojo y el especial cartagenero: la conducción con sarcasmo. Dícese de aquel estilo de conducción en el que el doble sentido sólo le hace gracia al piloto.
Aún así, ir en taxi por Cartagena de Indias relaja, porque te ahorra tener que estar todo el rato corriendo por pasos los pasos de cebra, también conocidos como líneas de meta, evitando que te atropellen los pilotos.
