We arrived at Rafael Nunez airport in Cartagena de Indias at 12 am.
A 13 hour trip with the airline Avianca: Madrid-Bogota, Bogota-Cartagena. Flights without a hitch and very enjoyable thanks to the on-board entertainment system with music, games and movies. Although, the food provided was nothing to write home about. However, the free wine and spirits offered made everything more bearable.
Rafael Núñez airport is small and cosy. Fitted out with palm trees, the humidity, the wind and the seaside smell let you know instantly that you have arrived to the Caribbean. At a temperature of 28oC degrees our winter clothes from Europe weren’t useful any more.
After collecting your luggage, you exit, leading you directly to the taxi area. On leaving the airport you will see a cafe on the left of the exit, and next to it an ATM. Although we couldn’t eat anything at the cafe because it closes at night, the cash machine saved our lives. Fortunately, we could withdraw the Colombian pesos that were sold out at the currency exchange offices in Madrid Airport. We desperately needed them to pay for a taxi to take us home.
The airport is located in the North of Cartagena de Indias, around 10-15 mins from the centre by taxi. To get to your destination there are two options: you can either get a taxi from the airport service, queuing outside for 12.000 pesos for the ride (£4.5 – 5€ – $6.60), or you can go for the other taxis driving close to the airport that charge less. The minimum price is 5.000 pesos plus 1.000 per neighbourhood, thus getting to the centre could end up being around 6.000 or 7.000 pesos (£2 – 2,5€ – $3.50). Never get into a taxi without asking for a quote first. Even so, it is always advisable to haggle. This is because there is nothing with a fixed price in Cartagena, especially if you don’t speak Spanish.
We could withdraw money in the ATM located at the end of the taxi line. Meanwhile, a taxi driver started chatting to us and he offered the ride for 12.000 pesos. The other taxi drivers from the beginning of the queue came rapidly complaining and asking him to respect the line. In the end, we decided to go with the quick-witted driver as he was at hand. He moved his car from the line by removing firstly the fence that demarcated the queue. He left us in the Marbella neighbourhood for 10.000 pesos (£3.60 – 4€ – $5.50).
We arrived around 1.30 am to the apartment where the landlord was expecting us. After showing us his lovely house and the wonderful view over the Caribbean sea from his terrace, we went to our room to rest after a long journey.

Llegamos al Aeropuerto Rafael Núñez de Cartagena de Indias a las 12 de la noche.
13 horas de viaje con la compañía Avianca: Madrid-Bogotá, Bogotá-Cartagena. Vuelos sin ningún contratiempo y bastante distraídos gracias al sistema de entretenimiento del que disponen abordo con música, películas y juegos. Aunque la comida que daban no fue nada del otro mundo, el vino y las bebidas alcohólicas que ofrecieron hicieron el viaje mucho más llevadero.
El Aeropuerto Rafael Núñez es pequeñito pero acogedor. Decorado con palmeras, la humedad, el viento y el olor a playa te hacen saber al instante que has llegado al Caribe. Con una temperatura de 28oC nuestras ropas invernales de Europa ya no servían.
Tras recoger las maletas se sale directamente a la parada de taxis. En esa misma zona hay una cafetería restaurante a la izquierda y justo al lado un cajero automático. Aunque no pudimos comer nada en la cafetería porque cierra por la noche, el cajero nos salvó la vida. Pudimos sacar los pesos colombianos que tenían agotados en las oficinas de cambio del aeropuerto de Madrid y que necesitábamos para poder pagar el taxi.
El aeropuerto se encuentra en el norte de la Ciudad de Cartagena, a unos 10-15 minutos del centro en taxi. Para desplazarte hay dos opciones, bien puedes coger los taxis del aeropuerto que hay haciendo cola y que cobran el viaje a 12.000 pesos (5€) o puedes subirte en los otros taxis que pasan por la zona y que tienen una tarifa más barata. La tarifa es 5.000 pesos mínimo más 1.000 pesos por barrio, por lo que llegar al centro puede salirte por 6.000 ó 7.000 pesos, unos 2,5€. Aun así, siempre es recomendable regatear, pues en Cartagena nada tiene un precio fijo para los turistas y menos aún si no hablas español.
Finalmente, pudimos sacar dinero en el cajero que se encuentra al final de la cola de taxis. Mientras tanto, un taxista empezó a darnos conversación y ofrecernos el viaje por 12.000 pesos. Los otros taxistas del principio de la fila vinieron rápidamente a quejarse para decirle que respetara la cola. Al final, por comodidad, nos fuimos con el primero que acabo siendo el más avispado. Sacó el coche moviendo la valla que delimitaba la cola y nos dejó en el barrio de Marbella por 10.000 pesos (4€).
Llegamos sobre la una y media de la noche al apartamento donde el casero nos estaba esperando. Tras enseñarnos su encantadora casa y las maravillosas vistas al mar Caribe desde su terraza, nos fuimos a nuestro cuarto a descansar del largo viaje.
